The Center’s Docent Program began when the museum opened in 1977. Docents are trained to give talks on the permanent collection, special exhibitions, and the building’s architecture. In response to written requests from the public, the group has also designed more than twenty tours that highlight particular aspects of the collection.

Becoming a docent requires a three-year commitment; one year of training followed by two years of service, which includes giving tours and participating in public programs, such as Family Fundays. Learning doesn’t stop after the initial training. Docents meet every Monday for two and a half hours, with additional time spent on special projects. Meetings cover everything from art history lessons to how one can create and give interactive tours.

While the docent-training program is not offered every year, we are always delighted to speak about the program and maintain a file of interested individuals.
