Constructing Meaning: Image and Narrative
This program aims to enrich teachers' understanding of how visual art can provide a unique approach to enhancing observation skills. Lectures, discussions, and workshops by university faculty, museum curators, educators, and artists will demonstrate artistic and critical thinking skills.
The institute, Constructing Meaning: Image and Narrative, is aligned with both national and state standards in Language Arts, Social Studies and the Visual Arts. Both the State of Connecticut and the New Haven school improvement plans call for increased professional development. By exploring the process of creating and drawing meaning from visual art, this institute will heighten verbal and writing skills and increase vocabulary. In turn, participants will be able to bring these exercises and techniques to their pedagogical practice, and develop teaching methods that explore: the difference between description and interpretation; the use of inductive and deductive reasoning; the use of concrete and abstract thinking skills; and the articulation of personal experience. This is particularly relevant to the Connecticut Mastery Standards in Language Arts (1-3), Arts: Visual Arts (13, 5, 6), and Social Studies: History (1, 3, 4).
Class will run from 10 am to 4 pm each day. Participants will assess the impact of the institute on their teaching and students' responses in an after-school evaluation session that will take place in the spring of 2008. Each teacher will attend all four days in July 2007, as well as the follow-up session in the spring of 2008. Two CEUs will be provided for full participation in the institute. The program is free of charge. A per diem will be provided to cover the cost of parking and lunch.

What does that MEAN?!`
This institute offers a professional development program that will enable Connecticut elementary school (K-8) teachers to use the Yale Center for British Art's collections to examine the use of narrative in artwork. While looking at paintings and sculptures, participants explore setting, characterization, conflict, and resolution, and consider the ways in which each of these elements plays a part in the narrative process. Emphasis is on the relationship between text and image and on tracing the similarities and differences in visual and verbal narrative forms. 2.0 CEUs available. The content of this institute meets the Connecticut State Standards on art, language arts, English, and social studies. Free. Lunch and parking are provided. Space is limited. To register or for more information, call 203 432 2858. This institue continues daily through July 13.
