Yale Center for British Art Visiting Scholars, Grants, Internships, and Opportunities

The Research Department of the Yale Center for British Art continually seeks to build new ties and establish closer links between our scholars and curators, the Yale University community and the international community of scholars, students and research institutes in the visual arts.  As part of that aim, we provide grants, internships, special courses, and residential awards, listed below, to enable Yale undergraduate and graduate students and international scholars to spend time working with YCBA collections and staff in order to advance their own research, education, and skills.

Visiting Scholars Program

The Yale Center for British Art offers residential awards ranging from one to four months to scholars undertaking postdoctoral or equivalent research related to British art. These awards allow scholars of literature, history, the history of art, and related fields to study the Center’s holdings of paintings, drawings, prints, rare books, and manuscripts. The Center also offers several pre-doctoral residential awards ranging from one to two months for graduate students writing doctoral dissertations in the field of British art. Applicants from North America must be ABD to qualify.

Visiting Scholar awards include the cost of travel to and from New Haven and also provide accommodations and a living allowance. Recipients are required to be in residence in New Haven and must be free of all other significant professional responsibilities during their stay. One fellowship per annum is reserved for a member of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies. By arrangement with the Huntington Library, San Marino, California, scholars may apply to each institution for awards in the same year; every effort will be made to offer consecutive dates.

Applications to become a visiting scholar between July 2009 and June 2010 must reach the YCBA by January 16, 2009, and should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a statement of 2–3 pages (single-spaced) outlining the proposed research project, and the preferred month(s) of tenure. Applicants should provide a title for their research project, and place their name on each page of the application. Two confidential letters of recommendation should arrive under separate cover by the same deadline.

Graduate Student Opportunities/Travel Grants

Graduate Research Assistantships

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs) at the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) and the Yale University Art Gallery (YUAG) are designed to provide Yale doctoral students, from the second through the sixth year, with the opportunity to work as part of the intellectual team on a major scholarly project at one of the museums. These research positions enhance the educational experiences provided by academic course work and teaching assistantships at Yale, allowing students to extend their range of academic specialism and expertise, and to augment research skills by direct contact with objects in the collections. Students also gain in-depth knowledge of the intellectual and logistical aspects of exhibition preparation and other professional skills, although the positions are not restricted to or intended only for those students who wish to pursue a museum career.

GRAs at the YCBA are open to graduate students in all disciplines, while GRAs at the YUAG are restricted to students specializing in History of Art. Six Graduate Research Assistantships will be awarded, four at the YCBA and two at the YUAG.

The application process is formal and competitive. Research assistantships are equivalent to University teaching assistant positions and cannot be negotiated through conversation with curators.

Undergraduate Student Opportunities

Undergraduate Special Term Course

The Yale Center for British Art offers each year a two-semester, two-credit Special Term Course.  The course is designed to enable a student to undertake a focused research project on British visual and material culture in conjunction with a major exhibition at the YCBA.  The student's project will form part of the intellectual preparation for the associated exhibition; thus the course will allow the student both to develop high-level research skills and to experience at first hand the intellectual and logistical processes involved in the creation of a major exhibition and its associated scholarly programming.

The course of study will include two field trips, in both North America and the UK. These will be funded by the YCBA and have been made possible by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. These trips will be scheduled during recesses, one in the fall, and one at spring break.

Sophomores and juniors majoring in any subject may apply.  Though the course will be for two semesters, the student's first semester work must be satisfactory in order to proceed to the second. The course is Cr/Year only.

For complete application information, including deadline and description of the course being offered, please click here.

For further information or questions, please email ycba.research@yale.edu, or lisa.ford@yale.edu, or call 203 432 9805.

The Nancy Horton Bartels Scholar Internships

The Nancy Horton Bartels Scholar Internships will provide funds for four undergraduate students to participate in academic year internships at the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art. The four internships are offered annually, two at the Gallery and two at the Center, and are funded by an endowment established in 2005 by Henry E. and Nancy Horton Bartels. Mr. and Mrs. Bartels are graduates of Cornell University.

The internships will familiarize students with the operations of museums and curatorial departments. The interns will work in a curatorial department for 10 hours per week for two consecutive semesters and will receive a stipend on an hourly basis.

Nancy Horton Bartels Scholar internships will be awarded to students who demonstrate superior performance in their respective fields.  Students should be seniors, juniors, or sophomores during the time they hold the internship. Internships focus on specific projects proposed by departments in the two museums. For complete application information, including deadline and descriptions of the internships being offered, please click here.

For further information or questions, please email ycba.research@yale.edu, or lisa.ford@yale.edu, or call 432-9805.

Art Museum Scholar Internships

Art Museum Scholar Internships will provide funds for four undergraduate students to participate in summer internships at the Yale University Art Gallery, the Yale Center for British Art, or other art museums. The four internships are named as follows:

Helen A. Cooper Scholar of American Art; Patricia E. Kane Scholar of American Art; Patrick McCaughey Scholar of British Art; Duncan Robinson Scholar of British Art

At least one of the four internships is to be held at the Yale University Art Gallery and one at the Yale Center for British Art. The internships at the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art will familiarize students with the operation of museums and curatorial departments. Students seeking opportunities with other art museums must procure such internships on their own. Although the awards are open to students in any field, preference will be given to Yale students whose interests lie in American art and/or British art. If selected as an Art Museum Scholar Intern, the internship will provide a stipend of up to $3,000. Internships must be eight weeks.

Internships will be awarded to students who demonstrate superior performance in their respective fields. For complete application information, including deadline and descriptions of the internships being offered, please click here.
