The Yale Student Guide Program

The Student Guide Program at the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) began in the fall of 2002 under the guidance of the Center’s Education Department. The goal of the program is to increase the profile and use of the Center among Yale undergraduates by offering undergraduates the opportunity to work closely with the most comprehensive collection of British art outside the United Kingdom.  Student guides meet weekly for talks by members of the Education Department, other curatorial staff, and guest speakers; trips to area museums, galleries, and private collections; and behind the scenes visits to other museum departments.

Student guides offer thematic tours to the general public and the Yale community.  During the academic year, tours are given on Saturdays and Sundays at 1 pm and for special weekend campus events.

Art in Focus is an annual student guide academic initiative that introduces guides with at least one year of experience to every aspect of exhibition practice. With guidance from curators and museum professionals, student guides curate an exhibition examining a work(s) of art in the Center’s collections. Art in Focus: John Flaxman Modeling Bust of William Hayley, curated under the guidance of Professor Charles Ryskamp, Director Emeritus of the Pierpont Morgan Library and Frick Collection, will open in February 2010.
