Yale-in-London classes are small and are held in a seminar environment.
Courses
which earn full Yale credits focus on British history
architecture art history literature and drama. Courses
are offered in both spring and summer. The Summer
Program consists of two six-week long sessions each
featuring two courses; the Spring Semester lasts for fifteen weeks
and features four courses.
Yale-in-London instructors include Yale University professors and
British scholars. Brian Allen, Director of Studies at the Paul Mellon Centre, is a Yale professor and teacher in the program. Field
trips to museums and historic houses in London and other English cities
are an integral part of the program, as are trips to many sites off
the tourist track. Drama courses make full use of London's theatre
scene, with visits to everything from top West End plays to small,
fringe productions, as well as talks by playwrights, directors, and
actors.
The Paul Mellon Centre is situated in the heart of London, close to
the British Museum and the University of London. The Centre has its
own library, classrooms, and students' common room. Student accommodations
are provided at convenient, nearby locations. Classes are scheduled
Monday through Thursday, generally in the mornings, so that students
can explore London or surrounding areas in the afternoons and on weekends.
Students are free to visit other parts of Britain or Europe during
long weekends or spring midterm break.
All undergraduates are eligible to apply to the Yale-in-London program.
Students enrolled in Yale College should note that they do not have
to apply for Junior Year Abroad. Tuition and housing fees are charged
to Yale students at the usual rates for the Spring Semester, and financial
aid is applied in the usual way. A separate fee is charged for the
Summer Program, and financial aid may be available. Students should visit the ISA web site, http.//www.yale.edu/isa (International Summer Award) which provides funding for one summer experience for undergraduates receiving Yale financial aid.
Although the majority
of students are from Yale University, the program welcomes applications
from those enrolled at other schools. Non-Yale students eligible for
financial aid should apply to their own college or university. Participants
are responsible for booking and paying for their own travel to and
from London.
