The Romantic Print in the Age of Revolutions
23 JANUARY, 2002 — 1 JUNE, 2003
The Romantic era was a time of turbulent change and limitless opportunity, when the cultural, political and social landscape in Europe was changed forever. As momentous historical events unfolded, they were captured by contemporary engravers, whose prints functioned as press photographs or television do today, powerfully evoking the intense and often bitter struggles of this "age of Liberty."
This exhibition, selected from the Center's permanent collections to complement Romantics & Revolutionaries, included some of the most compelling and immediate images of the Romantic period. Showcasing records of modern historical eventsthe French and American Revolutions, the Napoleonic Wars, and the Greek War of Independenceas well as images inspired by the Romantic fascination with the past and the great themes of literature, the exhibition also featured portraits, revealing how prints played a crucial role in creating the celebrity status of the great Romantic heroes and heroines.
