The Marble Bust
1 MARCH — 15 SEPTEMBER, 2004
In spring 2004, the Entrance Court of the Yale Center for British Art was transformed with the installation of a group of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century portrait busts from the Center's permanent collection. This elegant display is set off by two major sculptures by Barbara Hepworth, one of the most important British artists of the twentieth century. An abstact bronze from Paul Mellon's collection has been joined by Biolith (194849), the last major stone sculpture carved by Hepworth herself. Virginia Vogel Mattern has given this impressive work to the Center in memory of her husband, Gray (Yale College class of 1946).
